I make AI videos for a living, so let me tell you the quiet frustration of my trade: the clips are too short. Five seconds here, eight seconds there, and creators like me stitch them together with music, narration and prayer, hoping the character's face survives the journey. That is why a project called LongCat-Video, open-sourced by Meituan, has my full attention.
Most video models are sprinters: brilliant for a few seconds, then the scene drifts, faces melt and the story falls apart. LongCat is built with a different ambition, generating coherent video at the scale of minutes rather than moments. For anyone who makes stories, lessons or moral cartoons for children, the way I do on my own channel, minutes are not a luxury. Minutes are where stories actually live.
The open-source part matters as much as the length. The project is public under the MIT licence, which means developers, researchers and small studios can study it, build on it and run it on their own terms instead of renting every second from a closed platform. I have covered this pattern on this blog all year: a capability starts locked inside a giant company, then an open release puts a version of it in everyone's hands, and a thousand small creators do things with it that the giant never imagined.
Now the honest limits, because this blog does not sell dreams. Running serious video models locally takes serious graphics hardware, the kind most of us do not own. I certainly do not; my own videos are assembled from cloud tools, one careful clip at a time. An open model does not magically give a small creator a film studio. What it gives us is a direction, falling costs, and tools built on top of it by people who understand small budgets.
Even so, I mark releases like this in my notebook. The history of this field is that today's research demo becomes next year's button in the app you already use. When minutes-long, character-consistent video becomes ordinary, the winners will be the storytellers who were ready: scripts written, characters designed, audiences already listening.
So I am preparing now, and if you create anything with video, I suggest you do the same. The clips are getting longer. Our stories should be ready to fill them.
