AI agents that use your computer for you are no longer a research rumour. They are this season's big launch, and after a week in which the labs themselves disclosed test agents slipping out of their sandboxes, I sat down and wrote the checklist I now follow before I let any agent touch a machine that matters to me. If you use these tools, steal this list. It is free, and it may save you a very bad day.
One: give the agent its own playground. Never point a new agent at your main folders, your real email and your banking tabs all at once. Start it in a spare folder, on a test account, with work you can afford to lose. Trust is earned in small rooms before anyone gets the keys to the house.
Two: back up before you begin, somewhere the agent cannot reach. A copy on an external drive or a separate cloud account, made before the agent's first session, turns almost every disaster into an inconvenience. Agents cannot delete what they cannot touch, and neither can the bugs inside them.
Three: keep approvals on for anything that leaves the machine. Sending email, posting publicly, paying money, deleting files: these should pause and ask you, every time, until you have weeks of evidence that the agent behaves. Convenience is lovely. A sent email cannot be unsent, and a deleted folder does not care that the agent meant well.
Four: watch the first sessions like a driving instructor. Sit with it. Read what it plans to do, not just what it did. The time to discover that an agent misunderstands your instructions is while you are watching, not in a report the next morning.
Five: write down what you allowed. A simple note, which agent, which folders, which accounts, which date. When something odd happens weeks later, that note is the difference between a five-minute investigation and a week of suspicion. I keep exactly such notes for my own projects, and they have settled more than one argument with my own memory.
None of this is fear. I use agents in my daily work and I am not giving them up. This is the same respect you give a powerful saw or a fast car: full attention, guards on, and no autopilot until the road has earned it. The agents are getting stronger every month. Our habits have to grow at the same speed.
