OpenAI Is Quietly Stealing Anthropic's Biggest Customers With Huge Discounts

There is a price war happening at the very top of the AI world, and it is getting rough. According to reporting from The Information, OpenAI has been cutting prices by as much as 90 percent for some of Anthropic's largest customers, simply to pull them across. That is not a normal discount. That is a company paying to take the other side's crown jewels.

The examples are specific enough to be believable. At Rippling, OpenAI's share of the coding workload reportedly jumped from 16 percent to 52 percent, while Anthropic's share fell from 57 percent down to 18 percent. Replit switched after being offered more than 30 percent off a contract said to be worth over 100 million dollars a year. DataCamp's CEO said OpenAI's pricing cut his company's costs by 80 to 90 percent. One American bank even doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 employees at no extra charge, paying under 7 dollars per user against a usual rate of 20 dollars or more.

Let me be fair here: the 90 percent figure comes from individual negotiated deals described by one outlet, not from a public price list. Still, the direction of travel is obvious, and it matches what I keep seeing with my own eyes. Model prices across the industry keep falling, fast.

Why am I, a small creator running a blog and a few social pages, writing about contracts worth hundreds of millions? Because when giants fight, small users win. Every price cut at the top pushes API and subscription prices down for the rest of us. The tools I use for my videos, my blog and my client work keep getting better and cheaper in the middle of this fight, and I am not complaining.

But there is a catch, and it is one I have learned the hard way in business. A discount today can become a lock-in tomorrow. If a company builds its whole workflow on one provider because the deal was cheap, it has no easy way out when the price quietly goes back up. My rule for my own work is boring but safe: use the deals, enjoy the deals, but always keep a second tool ready.

The timing is brutal for Anthropic, by the way. The company is reportedly only weeks away from a stock market listing, which is the worst possible moment to have your biggest customers quoted explaining how much cheaper the competition turned out to be.

For now, my advice to fellow small creators is simple. Do not marry one AI company. Keep your prompts, your files and your workflow portable, take the discounts while they last, and let the giants pay for your learning curve.
