Meta Wants to Raise Up to 95 Billion Dollars for AI. Read That Number Again

There are numbers so large they stop sounding like money. Reports this week say Meta is planning an equity raise of up to 95 billion dollars to fund its AI infrastructure. Ninety-five billion. Not for an app, not for a headset, but for the concrete, chips and electricity that modern AI runs on.

Meta is not alone in this frenzy, and that is exactly the point. In the same stretch of news, xAI and SpaceX signed a GPU lease worth around 40 billion dollars, Anthropic disclosed hundreds of billions in purchase commitments in its public filing, and Nvidia put 3 billion dollars into Meta's offering itself. The chip maker is investing in its own customer so the customer can buy more chips. If that sentence makes your head spin a little, you are reading it correctly.

I run a tiny operation: a blog, some pages, a small video studio. My entire infrastructure budget would not cover the coffee at one of these data centres. So why do I write about these numbers every week? Because they decide what lands on my desk. Every warehouse of GPUs these giants build becomes, a year later, the cheaper API, the faster video tool and the free tier that small creators like me build businesses on.

But there is a shadow side I keep coming back to on this blog. When a handful of companies can raise sums larger than the budgets of small countries, the rest of the world becomes a customer, forever. Compute is becoming what oil was: the resource underneath everything, owned by whoever could spend first and biggest. Countries and creators who only consume it will rent their future, month by month.

My own small defence is the one I recommend to every reader here. Own your audience, own your files, keep your work portable between tools, and build skills that no single company's pricing page can switch off. I cannot raise 95 billion dollars. I can refuse to be helpless without it.

The giants are pouring concrete for the AI age at a scale nobody has ever seen. Whether this ends as the foundation of a new economy or the most expensive bubble in history, the concrete is real, the chips are real, and the tools arriving on our desks because of them are very real. I plan to keep using them, eyes open.
