If you built custom Gems in Google Gemini, the clock is now running. Google is replacing Gems with a new system called Skills, and for personal Google accounts the change starts on 17 November 2026. The good news is that you do not have to start again: Google says it will automatically recreate your Gems as Skills when Gems go away. The risk is in the details — especially your uploaded files — so the safest move is to check and back up your best Gems before the deadline, not after it.
What Gems are — and what Skills are
Gems, launched in 2024, are custom versions of Gemini built for one job: a learning coach, a coding partner, a running coach, an editor and so on. You open a Gem as its own separate assistant and chat with it there, instead of retyping the same instructions every time.
Skills are also reusable custom instructions, but they work inside any normal Gemini chat. Google lists three key benefits: you can call a Skill by typing / followed by its name (soon to change to @), Gemini can apply a Skill automatically when it recognises that your prompt matches it, and you can stack — combine — multiple Skills in a single chat. Skills are built on the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md standard, so a Skill file can also be imported from other platforms. You use Gemini at gemini.google.com, and Google says Skills are available without a Google AI subscription — no paid plan is required just to use Skills in chat.
The exact dates: who is affected and when
- Personal Google accounts, age 18 and over — November 2026. On 17 November 2026, Gems transition to Skills and become read-only: you can still access them, but you cannot use, edit or create new ones. On 17 December 2026, Gems are removed from Gemini Apps and you can no longer access them at all.
- Personal accounts under 18: your Gems transition at a later date. Google says it will share more details soon — no date has been given yet.
- Workspace business, enterprise and non-profit accounts — March 2027. Google's Workspace Updates blog puts this as no sooner than 1 March 2027 for business and enterprise accounts.
- Workspace education accounts — June 2027, listed as no sooner than 1 June 2027 in the Workspace announcement.
- Also ending in November: Opal, Google's experiment for building mini apps, and Gems by Google Labs go away at the same time, according to Google's help page.
One honest caveat on the 17 November date: Google's Workspace Updates post describes that day differently for Workspace users — Gems move into the Settings panel of the Gemini app, but Workspace users can keep creating, editing and using them for now. The read-only rule above is what Google's Gemini Apps Help page states for personal accounts, which is who this guide is mainly for. If you use a work or school account, your later 2027 timeline applies.
What happens to your existing Gems?
Auto-migration is the default. In Google's own words on its transition help page: "When we remove Gems, we'll automatically recreate your Gems as skills," and "Yes, we'll automatically transition your Gems to skills for you when Gems go away." TechCrunch reported the same from the in-app notice: users will not have to do anything to make the transition, and Gems remain usable until then. For Workspace accounts, Google adds that any Gems still remaining in the Gemini app are auto-migrated to draft Skills.
So why do anything at all? Because files are the weak point:
- 100 MB limit: a Skill can hold up to 100 MB of files in total. If your Gem is over that when Google moves it, Google says it will automatically remove the largest files first until the Skill is under the limit.
- Unsupported file types are dropped: GitHub files, audio files, video files, legacy Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and archives (.zip, .tar, .7z, .rar, .gz, .tgz) will not be included in the new Skill.
- The backup window closes on 17 December 2026: for personal accounts, Google says you can download your files from Gems before that date. After it, your Gems and their files will no longer be available in Gemini Apps.
- Some Gem tools do not work in Skills yet: Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and Create video and Create music. Google says Skills will gain Gem features it lists as coming in the following weeks, including sharing and adding files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook — but they are not all there today.
Step-by-step: move your Gems to Skills safely
You have two routes. You can simply wait for Google's auto-migration and then check the results, or you can recreate your most important Gems as Skills yourself right now — Google's help page gives this manual route in three steps, expanded below with its Create & manage Skills instructions. Doing it early is the only way to be sure nothing is lost.
- Audit your Gems first. Open Gemini, open each Gem you care about and note its name, description and instructions. Put your most-used and file-heavy Gems at the top of your list — those are the ones to move manually.
- Open the Gem and download any knowledge files. This is Google's Step 1. If you move files manually, Google says you must download them individually to your device first; you can then upload them all at the same time to the new Skill. Keep your own copy outside Gemini as a backup until after 17 December 2026.
- Go to the Skills page. Skills are available in the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com, the Gemini mobile app and the Gemini app on Mac. On the Skills page you can create a Skill with help from Gemini, from a prefilled or blank template, or by uploading a SKILL.md file or folder.
- Create a new Skill and copy over the details from your Gem. This is Google's Step 2. Choose Create manually for a blank template, then enter the Skill's name, a description of what it does, and the instructions copied from your Gem. Write the description clearly — saying when the Skill should be used helps Gemini apply it automatically — keep the instructions focused, and add a concrete example of the output you expect if you have one. Those are Google's own best practices for effective Skills.
- Add your files — carefully. While creating or editing the Skill, use Add to upload files from your device, or from Google Drive, Google Photos or Notebooks where that option is shown, then click Upload and Create. Check the total stays under 100 MB and that no file is an unsupported type listed above; convert old .doc, .xls or .ppt files to a modern format first, and keep audio, video and archive files backed up elsewhere, as they will not carry over.
- For Skills with many files, use Google's download-and-re-upload step. This is Google's Step 3 for recreating a Gem: "To add files, download your skill & upload it with your files." In practice, download the new Skill, place your files with it, and upload the complete Skill again — Google notes that to update files in a Skill you need to upload the entire Skill with its reference files again.
- Test the new Skill in a real chat. Open any chat, type / (or @ if your account already shows the updated shortcut), select your Skill, and run a task you would normally give the old Gem. Check the style, format and facts match. Try stacking it with a second Skill if that is how you plan to work.
- After auto-migration, check what Google created for you. Once your remaining Gems have been recreated as Skills, open each one from the Skills page, confirm its name, instructions and supported files survived, turn it on if you want Gemini to use it automatically, and fix anything missing from your backup copies — before 17 December 2026 removes the original Gems for good.
Honest caveats before you rely on Skills
- Skills do not yet match Gems feature for feature. Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, video creation and music creation do not work with Skills yet, per Google's help pages. If a Gem depends on one of those, its Skill version will be more limited for now.
- No dedicated chat list per Skill. Unlike Gems, Skills do not have a dedicated page listing your recent chats with that Skill; those chats sit in the normal side panel, because Skills can be used in any chat.
- Gemini app and Workspace Skills do not sync. Google and its Workspace announcement both state this plainly: to use a Skill in both places, you must create it separately in each.
- Deleting a Skill cannot be undone, so test a copy before you delete anything you might still need.
- Dates can move. Google has already delayed the rollout of Skills to Workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, Slides and Studio, with the October update to its Workspace post noting that launch is currently delayed. Treat the personal-account November dates as confirmed by Google's help page today, and re-check that page if your account behaves differently.
Bottom line: for most people with simple, text-only Gems, do nothing and Google will move you automatically — then do step 8 and check the result. If your Gems carry files, or power a workflow you depend on every day, spend 20 minutes now on steps 1 to 7. That small bit of work is the difference between a smooth upgrade to a more flexible system and discovering on 18 December that a file you needed is gone.
