NASA's Bill Nelson calls for a review of the Musk-Putin dialogue due to security concerns.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has requested a probe into a recent article by The Wall Street Journal that showed purported covert discussions between tech billionaire Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During a conference held by Semafor, Nelson stressed NASA's non-partisan approach and applauded SpaceX for their tremendous breakthroughs in spacecraft technology. However, he raised severe concerns regarding the ramifications of the purported discussions, noting, “I don’t know that that story is true. I think it should be investigated.”
If the claim is accurate—suggesting multiple discussions between Musk and Putin—it may raise substantial anxiety for NASA, the Department of Defense, and various U.S. intelligence agencies.
According to the Journal, Musk and Putin have been in communication since late 2022, with discussions verified by numerous current and former officials from the United States, Europe, and Russia. These conversations allegedly encompassed personal concerns, business interests, and critical geopolitical tensions. Notably, it was alleged that Putin encouraged Musk to refrain from launching Starlink internet service over Taiwan, offering this as a favor to China's President Xi Jinping.
While Musk has not publicly commented on the claims, his collaboration with NASA remains strong, underlined by the recent return of NASA's SpaceX Crew-8 mission after spending seven months at the International Space Station. Earlier this year, Putin referred to Musk as a “smart guy,” underscoring the requirement for effective communication with powerful persons like him.
This issue illustrates the delicate connection between technology, national security, and international politics, raising fundamental considerations about the roles famous people like Musk play on the world stage. As this narrative evolves, the consequences for both space exploration and geopolitical dynamics remain to be revealed.
